ProMune

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

ProMune is a cancer immunotherapy drug developed by Cell Genesys. It is designed to stimulate the body's immune system to fight against cancer.

History

ProMune was developed by Cell Genesys, a biotechnology company specializing in the development of cancer therapies. The company was founded in 1986 and has been a pioneer in the field of gene therapy and immunotherapy.

Mechanism of Action

ProMune works by stimulating the body's immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. It does this by introducing a modified form of the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) into the body. This modified virus is designed to express a protein that is commonly found on the surface of cancer cells. When the immune system encounters this protein, it is stimulated to attack cells that express it.

Clinical Trials

ProMune has undergone several clinical trials to test its safety and efficacy. These trials have shown promising results, with some patients experiencing significant reductions in their cancer symptoms. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of this treatment.

Side Effects

Like all cancer treatments, ProMune can cause side effects. These can include fever, fatigue, and nausea. However, these side effects are generally mild and manageable.

Future Research

Future research on ProMune will focus on optimizing the treatment protocol and exploring its potential use in combination with other cancer therapies. This could potentially enhance the effectiveness of the treatment and improve patient outcomes.
