Quechua people

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Quechua people are the indigenous people of South America who speak any of the Quechua languages. Most Quechua speakers live in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.

History

The Quechua people have a rich history that dates back to the Inca Empire, one of the most powerful empires in pre-Columbian America. The Inca Empire was a highly developed civilization known for its sophisticated agriculture, architecture, and complex social structure.

Language

Quechua is a Native South American language family and dialect cluster spoken primarily in the Andes, derived from a common ancestral language. It is the most widely spoken language family of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, with a total of probably some 8–10 million speakers.

Culture

Quechua culture is a vibrant mix of ancient Andean traditions and Spanish colonial influences. This is reflected in their folklore, music, dance, handicrafts, and cuisine. Quechua people are known for their colorful textiles, which are often woven with intricate patterns that tell stories or represent natural elements.

Religion

The Quechua people traditionally practice animism, believing in the spiritual essence of natural elements like mountains, rivers, and the earth. However, many Quechua people today are Roman Catholic, a result of Spanish colonial influence.

Economy

The Quechua people are primarily engaged in agriculture and herding, growing crops like potatoes, maize, and quinoa, and raising livestock like llamas and alpacas. Some Quechua people also engage in artisan work, producing goods like textiles and pottery.
