The park's moniker, Research Triangle Park, derives from its geographical positioning relative to the three anchoring cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, or more precisely, due to the proximity of three major research universities located within these cities: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Research Triangle region, named after the park itself, extends beyond these anchor cities to include the communities of Morrisville and Cary. Approximately one fourth of RTP's expanse falls within Wake County, with the lion's share situated in Durham County.
