Robert M. Califf is an American cardiologist and a prominent figure in the field of medicine. He has held several significant positions in the medical and regulatory sectors, most notably serving as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs at the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Early Life and Education
Robert Califf was born on September 28, 1951. He completed his undergraduate education at Duke University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended the Duke University School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree.
Career
Academic Career
Califf has had a long-standing association with Duke University, where he has served in various capacities. He was a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Duke University Medical Center. He also founded the Duke Clinical Research Institute, which has become one of the largest academic clinical research organizations in the world.
FDA Commissioner
Robert Califf was first appointed as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs at the FDA in February 2016, during the Obama administration. He succeeded Margaret Hamburg and was succeeded by Scott Gottlieb. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the regulation of food, drugs, medical devices, and other health-related products.
In 2021, Califf was nominated again to serve as the FDA Commissioner by President Joe Biden. He was confirmed by the United States Senate and began his second term in February 2022.
