Sevelamer

Sevelamer (pronounced: se-VEL-a-mer) is a phosphate binding drug used to prevent hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. When taken with meals, it binds to dietary phosphate and prevents its absorption. Sevelamer was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 1998.

Etymology

The name "Sevelamer" is derived from its chemical structure. The "Se" is for poly(allylamine hydrochloride), the "vel" is for the crosslinking agent epichlorohydrin, and "amer" is a common suffix for polymers.

Usage

Sevelamer is used to control phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It is a type of drug known as a phosphate binder. Sevelamer helps to reduce the level of phosphate in the body by binding to it in the intestines and preventing it from being absorbed into the body.
