Spelman College is a private, liberal arts college for women located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Founded in 1881, it is part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and is one of the oldest historically black colleges for women in the United States.
History
Spelman College was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles. The school was established to provide education to African American women in the post-Civil War South. In 1924, the institution was renamed Spelman College in honor of Laura Spelman Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, who was a significant benefactor of the college.
