Stephen R. L. Clark (born 30 October 1945) is a British philosopher and ethicist known for his work in animal rights, philosophy of religion, and metaphysics. He is an emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Liverpool.

Early Life and Education

Stephen R. L. Clark was born in Cambridge, England. He attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied Classics and Philosophy. He later completed his D.Phil. at Oxford University under the supervision of R. M. Hare.

Academic Career

Clark began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Glasgow before moving to the University of Liverpool, where he became a professor of philosophy. His work spans various fields, including ethics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science.

Philosophical Contributions

Clark is particularly noted for his contributions to animal rights and environmental ethics. He argues for the moral consideration of non-human animals and has written extensively on the subject. His book The Moral Status of Animals is considered a seminal work in the field.

In the realm of philosophy of religion, Clark has explored the intersections between Christianity and Platonism. He has also written on the nature of God, the soul, and the afterlife.
