Tony Dorsett

American football player

Anthony Drew "Tony" Dorsett (born April 7, 1954) is a former American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

Early life

Dorsett was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania, and attended Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He excelled in both football and track and field during his high school years.

College career

Dorsett attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he played for the Panthers from 1973 to 1976. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1976, becoming the first player from the university to receive the award. Dorsett also won the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, and was named the UPI College Football Player of the Year in the same year. He finished his college career with 6,082 rushing yards, which was an NCAA record at the time.

Professional career

Dorsett was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the second overall pick in the 1977 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and helping the Cowboys win Super Bowl XII. Dorsett was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1981. He played for the Cowboys until 1987 and finished his career with the Denver Broncos in 1988.

Legacy

Dorsett retired with 12,739 rushing yards, which ranked second in NFL history at the time. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Dorsett is also a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. His number 33 jersey is retired by the Dallas Cowboys, and he is a member of the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor.

Personal life

Dorsett has been involved in various charitable activities and has worked as a sports commentator. He has four children, including Anthony Dorsett, who also played in the NFL.
