University of Strasbourg

The University of Strasbourg (French: Université de Strasbourg, pronounced [ynivɛʁsite də stʁazbuʁ]; Alsatian: Universität Strossburi) is a higher education institution located in Strasbourg, France. It is the second largest university in France, with over 52,000 students and around 3,300 researchers.

Etymology

The name "University of Strasbourg" is derived from the city of its location, Strasbourg, which is the capital city of the Grand Est region of France. The term "university" originates from the Latin universitas, meaning "a whole".

History

The University of Strasbourg has a rich history, with its roots tracing back to the founding of the first university in Strasbourg in 1538. It was reestablished in 1971 following the division of the original University of Strasbourg into three separate institutions in 1970.
