Xipamide

Xipamide (pronounced as zee-pa-mide) is a type of diuretic medication that is primarily used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (swelling caused by excess fluid in the body's tissues).

Etymology

The term "Xipamide" is derived from the chemical name of the drug, which is 5-(2,6-dimethyl-1-piperidinyl)-3,4-dihydro-6-quinazolinimine. The "Xipa" part of the name is a contraction of the chemical name, while "-mide" is a common suffix used in the names of many diuretic drugs.

Usage

Xipamide works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine, thereby reducing blood pressure and swelling. It belongs to a class of drugs known as thiazide diuretics, although it is technically a sulfonamide derivative and not a thiazide.

Precautions

Before taking Xipamide, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to it; or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
