Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)

Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (pronounced: /ˈeərkraft ˈreskyo͞o ənd ˈfī(ə)rˌfītiNG/), often abbreviated as ARFF, is a special category of firefighting that involves the response, hazard mitigation, evacuation and possible rescue of passengers and crew of an aircraft involved in (typically) an airport ground emergency.

Etymology

The term "Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting" is derived from the primary tasks of the personnel trained in this discipline. "Aircraft" refers to the type of incident they respond to, "Rescue" refers to the potential for rescuing trapped passengers and crew, and "Firefighting" refers to the mitigation of fire hazards.
