Binasal Hemianopsia

Binasal Hemianopsia (pronounced: bi-na-sal he-mi-a-nop-sia) is a medical condition characterized by the loss of vision or blindness (anopsia) in the inner or nasal (nasal) halves of the visual field of both (bi-) eyes. This condition is typically caused by damage to the outer parts of the optic chiasm, a structure located at the base of the brain where the optic nerves from each eye cross.

Etymology

The term Binasal Hemianopsia is derived from the Greek words bi- meaning "two", nasal referring to the nose, hemi- meaning "half", and anopsia meaning "blindness".

Symptoms

The primary symptom of Binasal Hemianopsia is the loss of vision in the inner halves of both eyes. This can lead to difficulty in reading, recognizing faces, and navigating through the environment. Other symptoms may include headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

Causes

Binasal Hemianopsia is most commonly caused by damage to the outer parts of the optic chiasm. This damage can be due to a variety of conditions, including brain tumors, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Binasal Hemianopsia is typically made through a comprehensive eye examination, which may include visual field testing, ophthalmoscopy, and imaging studies such as MRI or CT scan.

Treatment

Treatment for Binasal Hemianopsia is primarily aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the condition. This may involve surgery, radiation therapy, or medication to treat a brain tumor, or various therapies to manage conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis. In some cases, vision therapy may be recommended to help improve visual function.
