Healthcare in Senegal

Healthcare in Senegal (pronunciation: /ˈsɛnɪɡɔːl/; etymology: from the Wolof "Sunugaal" meaning "our boat") refers to the provision of medical services in the West African nation of Senegal.

History

The healthcare system in Senegal has evolved significantly since the country's independence in 1960. Initially, healthcare was primarily provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and faith-based organizations. However, the Senegalese government has increasingly taken on a larger role in healthcare provision and regulation.

Healthcare System

Senegal's healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The Ministry of Health and Social Action is responsible for the overall management and regulation of the healthcare system. It oversees a network of health posts, health centers, and regional and national hospitals.

Private healthcare providers, including both for-profit and not-for-profit entities, also play a significant role in the healthcare system. These include clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies.

Health Issues

Major health issues in Senegal include malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and maternal and child health issues. The country has made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of these diseases in recent years, but they remain significant public health challenges.

Health Financing

Healthcare in Senegal is financed through a combination of government funding, out-of-pocket payments, and external funding from donors such as the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

In 2013, Senegal introduced a universal health coverage policy, which aims to ensure that all Senegalese citizens have access to affordable, quality healthcare services.
