Inflammaging

Inflammaging (pronounced: /ɪnˈflæm.ə.dʒɪŋ/) is a term coined in the field of biogerontology to describe a chronic, low-grade inflammation that is associated with age-related morbidity and senescence. The term is a portmanteau of "inflammation" and "aging".

Etymology

The term "Inflammaging" was first introduced by Claudio Franceschi and his team in 2000. It is a combination of the words "inflammation" and "aging", reflecting the concept that aging is accompanied by a low-grade chronic inflammatory status.

Definition

Inflammaging is characterized by the upregulation of the immune system, resulting in persistent inflammation and a higher susceptibility to pathogens. It is considered a significant risk factor for both morbidity and mortality in the elderly people as it contributes to the pathogenesis of aging-related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer.

Related Terms

  • Biogerontology: The study of the biological aspects of aging.
  • Senescence: The condition or process of deterioration with age.
  • Morbidity: The condition of being diseased.
  • Pathogens: A bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
