23andMe (/tuː θriː ænd miː/) is a privately held personal genomics and biotechnology company based in Sunnyvale, California. It is best known for providing a direct-to-consumer genetic testing service in which customers provide a saliva sample that is laboratory analysed, using single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping, to generate reports relating to the customer's ancestry and genetic predispositions to health-related topics.

Etymology

The name "23andMe" refers to the fact that human DNA is organized into 23 pairs of chromosomes. The company's personal genome test kit was named "Invention of the Year" by Time magazine in 2008.

History

23andMe was founded in 2006 by Anne Wojcicki, Linda Avey, and Paul Cusenza. The company's personal genome test kit was named "Invention of the Year" by Time magazine in 2008.

Services

23andMe offers two Personal Genome Services: Health + Ancestry and Ancestry + Traits. The Health + Ancestry service provides insights on a user's health predispositions*, carrier status*, wellness, and trait reports. The Ancestry + Traits service provides information about a user's ancestry, genealogy, and inherited traits.
