Belnacasan is a pharmaceutical drug that acts as an inhibitor of the caspase-1 enzyme. It is primarily used in the treatment of auto-inflammatory diseases and conditions characterized by excessive inflammation.

Mechanism of Action

Belnacasan works by inhibiting the activity of caspase-1, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the inflammatory response. Caspase-1 is responsible for the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). By inhibiting caspase-1, belnacasan reduces the production of these cytokines, thereby decreasing inflammation.

Research and Development

Belnacasan is currently under investigation for its potential use in treating other inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
