Ciprofol
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone class. It is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin was introduced in 1987 and is manufactured by Bayer.
History
Ciprofloxacin was first patented in 1983 by Bayer A.G. and it became available in the market in 1987. It was the second fluoroquinolone brought to the market by Bayer, following norfloxacin.
Medical Uses
Ciprofloxacin is used to treat a wide variety of infections, including infections of bones and joints, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, malignant otitis externa, respiratory tract infections, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, anthrax, and chancroid.
Side Effects
Common side effects of ciprofloxacin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and rash. It may also increase the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in older patients.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the A subunits of DNA gyrase, preventing DNA supercoiling and DNA synthesis.
Resistance
Bacterial resistance to ciprofloxacin occurs due to overuse, especially in healthcare settings.
