Essilor (/ɛˈsiːlɔːr/; French: [ɛsiˈlɔʁ]) is a French-based international ophthalmic optics company that designs, manufactures and markets lenses to correct or protect eyesight. Its headquarters is in Charenton-le-Pont (near Paris), France.

Etymology

The name "Essilor" is derived from the combination of two words, "Essel" and "Silor". Essel was a French company founded in 1849, known for the production of gold-filled spectacles. Silor was a company founded in 1931, which initially produced lenses for sunglasses. In 1972, these two companies merged to form Essilor.
