Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (pronunciation: /ˈaɪkɑːn/ School of Medicine at /maʊnt ˈsaɪnaɪ/) is a graduate medical school in New York City. It was chartered by Mount Sinai Hospital in 1963.

Etymology

The school was originally named Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 2012, it was renamed in honor of Carl Icahn, an American businessman and philanthropist who made a significant donation to the school.

History

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai was established in 1963. It was the first medical school to grow out of a non-university setting in more than 50 years. The school has a strong emphasis on medical research, biomedical science, and patient care.
