Lamaze (Pronunciation: luh-MAHZ)

The Lamaze technique is a method that is used to prepare for childbirth by promoting a woman's confidence in her ability to give birth. It was developed by the French obstetrician Dr. Fernand Lamaze in the 1940s based on his observations in the Soviet Union.

Etymology

The term "Lamaze" is derived from the name of its founder, Dr. Fernand Lamaze.

Description

The Lamaze technique teaches that birth is a normal, natural, and healthy process and that women should be empowered to approach it with confidence. It uses a variety of non-medical strategies to help women cope with the pain of childbirth, such as relaxation techniques, movement and positions, and massage. The Lamaze technique also encourages the presence of a birth partner during labor and delivery to provide emotional support and physical assistance.
