Pontificia Universidad Javeriana
Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is a prestigious private university located in Bogotá, Colombia. It is one of the oldest and most traditional higher education institutions in the country, founded by the Society of Jesus in 1623. The university is named after Francis Xavier, a co-founder of the Society of Jesus, and is commonly referred to as "La Javeriana."
History
The university was initially established as the Colegio de San Francisco Javier in Bogotá by the Jesuits in 1623, focusing on the study of humanities, philosophy, and theology. It was closed in 1767 when the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies. However, it was re-established in 1930 and granted the title of "Pontifical" by Pope Pius XII in 1937, recognizing its close ties to the Vatican and its commitment to providing a comprehensive Catholic education.
Campuses
Pontificia Universidad Javeriana has two main campuses. The principal campus is located in Bogotá, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across various fields of study. The second campus, situated in Cali, focuses primarily on health sciences, although it also offers programs in other areas.
