Venango County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 50,454. Its county seat is Franklin, and its largest city is Oil City.

History

Venango County was created on March 12, 1800, from parts of Allegheny and Lycoming counties. The county was named for the Venango Path, a Native American trail that ran through the area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 683 square miles (1,770 km²), of which 674 square miles (1,750 km²) is land and 9.0 square miles (23 km²) (1.3%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 50,454 people, 21,978 households, and 13,789 families residing in the county. The population density was 75 people per square mile (29/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.5% White, 1.2% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. 0.9% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Venango County is governed by a board of three county commissioners. The county is part of Pennsylvania's 15th congressional district.
