Wallace H. White

Wallace H. White, Jr. (August 6, 1877 – March 31, 1952) was an influential American politician and member of the Republican Party, who served as a U.S. Representative and later as a U.S. Senator from the state of Maine. His legislative work and leadership spanned several key periods in American history, including the Great Depression and World War II.

Early Life and Education

Wallace Humphrey White, Jr. was born in Lewiston, Maine, to Wallace H. White, Sr., and his wife. He attended the local schools in Lewiston and went on to study at Bates College, where he graduated in 1899. After college, he pursued a career in law, graduating from the Harvard Law School in 1903.

Political Career

U.S. Representative

White began his political career when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1916, representing Maine's 2nd congressional district. During his tenure in the House, he was known for his expertise in legal and economic issues, and he served on several important committees.

U.S. Senator

In 1931, White was elected to the United States Senate, where he would serve until 1949. As a senator, he gained a reputation as a skilled legislator and a moderate Republican. He played a significant role in shaping foreign policy and defense legislation during World War II. Notably, he was involved in the drafting of the Lend-Lease Act, which was crucial in providing support to allies during the war.

Legacy and Impact

White's legislative career was marked by his commitment to public service and his ability to work across party lines. He was respected by colleagues for his integrity and deep knowledge of the law and legislative process.

Later Life and Death

After retiring from the Senate in 1949, White returned to Maine, where he lived until his death in 1952 in Auburn, Maine. He is remembered as one of Maine's most distinguished politicians.
