Nodules

Nodules (/ˈnɒdjuːlz/) are small, rounded masses or lumps that form in various parts of the body due to the growth of abnormal tissue. They can be found in organs such as the thyroid gland, lungs, or skin, and can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Etymology

The term "nodule" originates from the Latin word "nodulus", which means a small knot. It was first used in the medical context in the 15th century.

Types of Nodules

There are several types of nodules, including:

  • Thyroid Nodules: These are lumps that form within the thyroid gland. They are usually benign, but can sometimes be cancerous.
  • Lung Nodules: Also known as pulmonary nodules, these are small masses of tissue in the lung. They are often found during imaging tests for other conditions.
  • Skin Nodules: These are lumps that form under the skin. They can be caused by a variety of conditions, from benign cysts to skin cancer.
  • Rheumatoid Nodules: These are firm lumps that often form near joints in people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Nodules are typically diagnosed through imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. If a nodule is suspected to be cancerous, a biopsy may be performed to examine the tissue under a microscope.

Treatment for nodules depends on the underlying cause. Benign nodules may not require treatment unless they cause symptoms. Malignant nodules, on the other hand, may require surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

Related Terms

  • Cyst: A closed sac-like structure that can be filled with fluid, pus, or other material.
  • Tumor: An abnormal growth of cells that can be benign or malignant.
  • Lesion: A broad term for any abnormal area in an organ or tissue.
