Esthesioneuroblastoma (pronounced es-thee-zio-neuro-blastoma), also known as Olfactory Neuroblastoma, is a rare type of cancer that originates in the upper part of the nasal cavity. The term is derived from the Greek words "esthesia" meaning sensation, "neuro" referring to nerve, and "blastoma" indicating a cancer that affects immature cells.

Definition

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a malignant neoplasm that arises from the olfactory epithelium of the upper nasal cavity and is believed to originate from the olfactory bulb, which is responsible for the sense of smell. Despite its aggressive nature, it is a rare condition, accounting for only 3% of all sinonasal cancers.

Symptoms

The symptoms of esthesioneuroblastoma can vary greatly depending on the stage of the disease. Early symptoms may include nasal obstruction, epistaxis (nosebleeds), and a decreased sense of smell. As the tumor grows, it can cause more severe symptoms such as facial pain or numbness, frequent sinusitis, and visual disturbances.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma often involves a combination of physical examination, imaging studies such as MRI or CT scan, and biopsy of the tumor. The Kadish staging system is commonly used to determine the extent of the disease.

Treatment

Treatment options for esthesioneuroblastoma typically include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, often used in combination. The choice of treatment depends on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health.

Prognosis

The prognosis for patients with esthesioneuroblastoma can vary widely, depending on factors such as the stage of the disease at diagnosis, the patient's age and overall health, and the effectiveness of treatment.
