Leverett House

Leverett House is one of the twelve undergraduate residential houses at Harvard University, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is part of the Harvard College residential system, which provides a unique living and learning environment for students. Leverett House is named after John Leverett, who was the first president of Harvard College to be born in America.

History

Leverett House was established in 1931 as part of Harvard's house system, which was designed to provide students with a more intimate and supportive community within the larger university. The house system was inspired by the collegiate systems at Oxford University and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

The original Leverett House was located in the buildings now known as the "Old Leverett" complex, which includes McKinlock Hall. In the 1960s, Leverett House expanded to include the Leverett Towers, two high-rise buildings that provide additional student housing.

Architecture

Leverett House is known for its distinctive architecture, which combines traditional and modern elements. The "Old Leverett" complex features Georgian-style architecture, with red brick facades and white trim. The Leverett Towers, on the other hand, are modernist structures with concrete and glass exteriors.

Community and Traditions

Leverett House has a vibrant community with a variety of traditions and events. The house hosts regular social events, academic seminars, and cultural activities. One of the most popular traditions is the annual "Leverett House Formal," a formal dance held in the spring.

The house is also known for its mascot, the "Leverett Bunny," which is a playful symbol of the house's spirit and camaraderie.

Academic and Extracurricular Opportunities

Leverett House provides numerous academic and extracurricular opportunities for its residents. The house has a library, study spaces, and seminar rooms where students can engage in academic pursuits. Leverett House also supports a variety of student organizations and clubs, ranging from music and arts to sports and community service.
