urinary system - (pronounced) (YOOR-ih-NAYR-ee SIS-tem) The organs that produce urine and remove it from the body. The urinary system is divided into two parts. The upper urinary system includes the kidneys and ureters. The lower urinary system includes the bladder and urethra. The kidneys remove waste and excess fluid from the blood to make urine. Urine flows from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder. It is stored in the bladder until it leaves the body through the urethra. Also called urinary tract
