The Flag of India is the official national flag of the Republic of India. It is a horizontal tricolor of India saffron, white and India green; with the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel, in navy blue at its center. It was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on 22 July 1947, and it became the official flag of the Dominion of India on 15 August 1947.
Design
The design of the national flag was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 22 July 1947, a few weeks before India's independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947. The flag, by law, is to be made of khadi, a special type of hand-spun cloth of cotton or silk made popular by Mahatma Gandhi.
Symbolism
The saffron color represents courage and sacrifice; white - truth and purity; green - peace and prosperity. At the center is the Ashoka Chakra (the Wheel of Law) in navy blue, which represents the continuing progress of the nation. Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath.
Protocol
The flag code of India governs the usage of the flag. This code was established by the Government of India to ensure that the flag is displayed in a respectful manner. It is based on the general code of the United Nations but includes some provisions that are unique to India.
