Sternoclavicular (ˌstɜːrnoʊkləˈvɪkjʊlər)

The Sternoclavicular joint, often abbreviated as SC joint, is the articulation between the sternum (breastbone) and the clavicle (collarbone). It is one of the four joints that complete the shoulder.

Etymology

The term "Sternoclavicular" is derived from the Latin words "sternum" meaning chest, and "clavicula" meaning little key, referring to the bone's key-like shape.

Anatomy

The Sternoclavicular joint is a synovial joint, which means it is filled with synovial fluid that helps in reducing friction between the articulating bones. It is the only bony connection between the axial skeleton and the upper limb. It is strengthened by the anterior and posterior sternoclavicular ligaments and the interclavicular ligament.
