Ivory Coast (pronunciation: /ˌaɪvəri ˈkoʊst/), also known as Côte d'Ivoire (pronunciation: /ˌkoʊt diːˈvwɑːr/), is a country located on the West African coast. The official language is French.

Etymology

The name "Ivory Coast" comes from the major trade that took place on the coast from the 15th to 17th century, which was ivory. The French name, Côte d'Ivoire, translates to "Coast of Ivory".
