President and Fellows of Harvard College
The President and Fellows of Harvard College (also known as the Harvard Corporation) is the smaller of Harvard University's two governing boards, the other being the Board of Overseers. The Corporation was established in 1650 by the Massachusetts General Court and is the oldest corporation in the Western Hemisphere.
Structure and Function
The Corporation consists of the President of Harvard University, the Treasurer of Harvard University, and other members known as Fellows. The number of Fellows has varied over time, but it currently includes the President, the Treasurer, and 12 other members. The Corporation exercises fiduciary responsibility with regard to the University's academic, financial, and physical resources and overall well-being.
President of Harvard University
The President of Harvard University serves as the chief executive officer of the University and is a member of both the Corporation and the Board of Overseers. The President is responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the University.
Treasurer of Harvard University
The Treasurer of Harvard University oversees the financial affairs of the University and is also a member of the Corporation. The Treasurer works closely with the President and other senior administrators to manage the University's endowment and financial resources.
Fellows
The Fellows are distinguished individuals from various fields who bring diverse perspectives and expertise to the governance of the University. They are elected by the Corporation and serve for renewable terms.
History
The Corporation was established by the Charter of 1650, which was granted by the Massachusetts General Court. This charter is one of the oldest in the United States and has been amended several times to adapt to the changing needs of the University.
Responsibilities
The Corporation is responsible for making major decisions regarding the University's policies, budget, and overall direction. It works in close collaboration with the Board of Overseers, which provides advice and consent on certain matters.
Meetings
The Corporation meets regularly to discuss and make decisions on a wide range of issues affecting the University. These meetings are typically held in Harvard Yard and are attended by the President, the Treasurer, and the Fellows.
