Hypochondria (pronounced: hi-po-KON-dree-uh), also known as Illness Anxiety Disorder or Health Anxiety, is a condition where a person is excessively worried about having a serious illness, despite having no or only mild symptoms.

Etymology

The term "Hypochondria" comes from the Greek words hypo (meaning "under") and chondros (meaning "cartilage (of the sternum)"). In ancient times, it was believed that this area of the body was the source of melancholy and anxiety disorders.

Definition

Hypochondria is characterized by a person's misinterpretation of normal bodily functions as symptoms of serious illness. People with this condition often mistake normal or minor body sensations and discomforts as signs of major medical problems.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of Hypochondria include:

  • Preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious disease.
  • Misinterpretation of bodily symptoms.
  • High level of anxiety about health.
  • Doctor-shopping or frequently switching doctors.
  • Compulsive checking of the body for symptoms.
  • Avoidance of people or places for fear of exposure to diseases.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Hypochondria is typically made by a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, based on the person's symptoms and medical history. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) provides criteria for diagnosing this condition.

Treatment

Treatment for Hypochondria often involves cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps the person learn to change unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. Medications, such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, may also be used.
