Vargatef

Vargatef (pronounced var-GAH-tef) is a medication used in the treatment of lung cancer. It is known generically as nintedanib and is marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim.

Etymology

The name "Vargatef" is a brand name, and does not have a known etymology. The generic name, "nintedanib", is derived from the chemical structure of the drug.

Usage

Vargatef is used in combination with another drug, docetaxel, to treat adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has spread to other parts of the body. It is used when the cancer has progressed after other treatments have been tried.

Mechanism of Action

Vargatef works by blocking the action of certain proteins that are involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells. This helps to slow down the growth of the cancer and may also shrink the tumor.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Vargatef include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fatigue. More serious side effects can include liver damage, bleeding, and heart problems.
