Dalbavancin

Dalbavancin (pronounced dal-ba-van-cin) is a lipoglycopeptide antibiotic used in the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) caused by certain susceptible bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Etymology

The name "Dalbavancin" is derived from the vancomycin, a similar type of antibiotic, and the prefix "dalba-" which is an arbitrary prefix.

Usage

Dalbavancin is administered intravenously and is often used when other antibiotics are ineffective. It works by interfering with the bacteria's cell wall formation, causing the cell wall to break down and eventually leading to the death of the bacteria.
