Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis (pronunciation: /ˌplæntər fəˈsaɪɪtɪs/) is a common condition that causes pain in the heel of the foot due to inflammation of the plantar fascia.

Etymology

The term "plantar fasciitis" comes from the Latin "plantar" meaning "of the sole" and the Greek "fascia" meaning "band" or "bundle", and "-itis" denoting inflammation.

Definition

Plantar fasciitis is a disorder that results in pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. The pain is usually most severe with the first steps of the day or following a period of rest. The condition is due to an overuse injury of the sole of the foot's connective tissue, known as the plantar fascia.

Symptoms

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel. This can sometimes extend to the bottom of the foot. The pain can be dull or sharp, and is usually worse in the morning or after standing or sitting for long periods.

Causes

Plantar fasciitis is often caused by straining the ligament that supports the arch of your foot. Repeated strain can cause tiny tears in the ligament, leading to pain and swelling. This is more likely to happen if:

  • Your feet roll inward too much when you walk (excessive pronation)
  • You have high arches or flat feet
  • You walk, stand, or run for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces
  • You are overweight
  • You wear shoes that don't fit well or are worn out

Treatment

Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes rest, physical therapy, pain relievers, and sometimes surgery. In most cases, plantar fasciitis can be treated effectively with conservative treatments such as stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy.
