New York Giants
New York Giants
The New York Giants are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team plays its home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which it shares with the New York Jets. The Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925, and they are the only one of that group still existing, as well as the league's longest-established team in the Northeastern United States.
History
The Giants were founded in 1925 by Tim Mara in New York City. The team has won eight NFL championships: four in the pre-Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956) and four since the advent of the Super Bowl (1986, 1990, 2007, 2011). The Giants have appeared in more than 30 playoff games, and they have the third most championship appearances of any NFL team, with 19 overall appearances.
Rivalries
The Giants have several notable rivalries, including with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Commanders. These rivalries are among the oldest and most storied in the NFL, often featuring intense and closely contested games.
Stadium
The Giants have played their home games at several stadiums throughout their history. They originally played at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan, then moved to Yankee Stadium in The Bronx in 1956. In 1976, they moved to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which they shared with the Jets starting in 1984. In 2010, both teams moved to the newly constructed MetLife Stadium.
Notable Players
The Giants have had many notable players throughout their history, including Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, Michael Strahan, and Eli Manning. Taylor is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, while Manning led the team to two Super Bowl victories and was named Super Bowl MVP in both games.
Coaching
The Giants have had several notable head coaches, including Bill Parcells, who led the team to two Super Bowl victories, and Tom Coughlin, who also won two Super Bowls with the team. The current head coach is Brian Daboll.
Ownership
The team has been owned by the Mara family since its inception. Tim Mara's son, Wellington Mara, was a long-time owner and influential figure in the NFL. The team is currently co-owned by Wellington's son, John Mara, and Steve Tisch, whose family has been co-owners since 1991.
