Pitolisant

Pitolisant (pronunciation: pi-to-li-sant) is a medication used for the treatment of narcolepsy, a chronic sleep disorder. It is a selective histamine H3 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist.

Etymology

The term "Pitolisant" is derived from its chemical name, 3-{3-[3-(piperidin-1-yl)propoxy]phenyl}propanoic acid. The name was coined by the pharmaceutical company Bioprojet, which first developed the drug.

Usage

Pitolisant is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy in adults with narcolepsy. It works by increasing the amount of histamine in the brain, which promotes wakefulness.

Dosage and Administration

Pitolisant is taken orally, usually once a day in the morning. The dosage is based on the patient's medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications they may be taking.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Pitolisant include insomnia, nausea, and anxiety. Serious side effects may include irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, and severe dizziness.
