Carbinoxamine Maleate

Carbinoxamine maleate (pronounced as kar-bin-OX-a-meen MAL-ee-ate) is an antihistamine and anticholinergic agent. It is used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. These symptoms include rash, itching, watery eyes, itchy eyes/nose/throat, cough, runny nose, and sneezing.

Etymology

The term "Carbinoxamine" is derived from its chemical structure, which is a combination of a carbonyl group (CO), a benzene ring (inox), and an amine group (NH2). The "maleate" part refers to the salt of maleic acid that is used to form the drug.

Usage

Carbinoxamine maleate is used to treat symptoms such as itching, runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing from hay fever and other allergies, e.g., allergies to molds and dust mites. It is also used to relieve itching from hives.

Mechanism of Action

Carbinoxamine maleate works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. Its drying effects on such symptoms as watery eyes and runny nose are caused by blocking another natural substance made by your body (acetylcholine).
