Butorphanol

Butorphanol (/bjuːˈtɔːrfənɒl/) is a morphinan-type synthetic agonist–antagonist opioid of the phenanthrene class. It is primarily used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, as well as for sedation in specific medical procedures.

Etymology

The term "Butorphanol" is derived from a combination of the words "Butane" and "Orphanol". "Butane" is a reference to the butyl group in its chemical structure, and "Orphanol" is a reference to the morphinan chemical structure.
